Playhouses don't come much simpler than this Chad Valley model - but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you're in the market for a compact, relatively cheap and readily portable model for a younger child. It features an open, airy design which is attractive in its simplicity but which doesn't lack some nice features, like the attractive Georgian style window to the front complete with window box underneath. Clearly the playhouse won't be waterproof, but its open design means it will quickly dry out after a shower - and it will provide well ventilated shade on a hot sunny day in addition to providing children with an attractive play feature. There's no floor which is an advantage in a playhouse of this type as it helps to avoid water collecting inside during wet weather.
You certainly won't have to spend much time putting it together - it arrives in pre-formed panels which the manufacturer suggests will take two adults about 60 minutes to assemble - and it's ready to use straight away by virtue of its pre-stained timbers. The quality of the finish looks decent - although we'd suggest, as with all wooden playhouses, that you check the wood over for any rough edges or small splinters which might have escaped the manufacturing process and smooth off anything you find at the time of assembly.
What else can we say? What you see is what you get with this one and it's a welcome addition to the small playhouse range, sitting nicely alongside models like the TP Cubby and Plum Garden Hut. It's new to the market at the time of review and there's no real customer feedback available - we're sure it will be a popular model however so that shouldn't be long in coming. If we have a concern at all it's over the durability of the finish if the playhouse is kept permanently outdoors. The manufacturer describes the construction as durable, weather resistant wood - but there's no sign of any treatment having been applied beyond the stain finish and the guarantee on offer is restricted to one year. Time will tell on this point, but you may have to think about renewing the finish after a few seasons outdoors. Having said that, it isn't a big issue. All wooden outdoor buildings need a degree of maintenance of this type and it would be unrealistic to think that this playhouse would be an exception.
Assuming the open design is what you're after, the Chad Valley wooden playhouse should serve you well. It's size means it's suitable for indoor use too and should allow it to be stored inside during the winter months. We've awarded it it 4.5 wooden playhouse stars as a nice economical example of its type.
