Our Verdict
Well, the Hazel Den isn't what springs immediately to mind when you think of a wooden playhouse but it certainly can't be faulted for character and quirkiness. Its fair trade, hand woven young hazel branches are ideal if you're looking for a natural rustic looking addition to the garden although be warned that if the playhouse is kept permanently outdoors the hazel will take on a faded appearance. The result of this will either be a naturally aged vintage playhouse of considerable character or a rather worn out looking feature - it all depends on your point of view.
The interwoven hazel will result in a reasonably robust structure although it won't be entirely wind and watertight. On a nice day however it will be a delightful attraction for smaller children providing them with their own play-den, but one in which they can be easily supervised and which will provide shade when the summer sun is bright.
Assembly of the Hazel Den is very straightforward, the woven panels being held together by small plastic ties. Note however that because of the nature of the construction you may well find that you can't get a tight fit between all the panels. This is entirely in keeping with the playhouse's natural appearance and we don't see it as a problem. The nature of the construction makes the playhouse fairly readily portable as well which means it can be moved around to maintain interest and to help avoid damage to lawns.
We would have liked to see a door to the playhouse to help keep out animals which might soil the interior but other than this we don't really see anything here we don't like, always assuming that this is the type of playhouse you're looking for. The Hazel Den has the advantage over its cousin the Hazel Castle of being enclosed so it will provide shade on a hot day, shelter in light rain and generally a little hidey hole for small children to call their own. On the basis it's the type of feature you're looking for we've given it a four star rating.
